So,

What is WordPress marketing automation?

Marketing automation is the process of automating the repetitive tasks undertook during a marketing campaign, especially a multi-channel one. Examples of marketing automation include utilizing software for tracking social media, emails, and websites and analyzing links to measure impact, target, and assess public perception better, scheduling email sequences to get leads to convert, as well as tools and resources for running internal marketing processes at a higher level, such as marketing calendars and budgeting tools, online collaboration applications, and templates for creating various digital assets easier and quicker.

In short, marketing automation is all about bringing the achievements of modern technology to the task of marketing your products and services better online (although, isn’t most marketing online these days?). And WordPress marketing automation is if your marketing efforts are for your WordPress website. Most often than not WordPress marketing automation comes in the form of plugins, which are, as every WP user knows, applications or pieces of code you can install and activate to extend your site’s functionality.

Now that you know what WordPress marketing automation is, let’s move on to discussing why you need it in the first place.

Why do you need marketing automation?

Personalization and tailoring unique experiences for individual users is everything. Running a site with a consistently growing customer base could quickly get very difficult for manual management. While taking care of a growing customer base, there are a lot of repetitive tasks that need doing on a daily basis, such as, sending emails, gathering user data and preference, customizing the website based on user preference, etc. Considering the scope of these tasks and the potential increase in your customer base, customizing your site and providing a unique experience to your customers on a daily basis might be almost impossible.

Luckily for you, there’s a lot of marketing automation software out there. And if you have a WordPress site, by installing just a handful of plugins, you can automate almost the entire marketing related functionality of your website.

Marketing automation plugins

In this list, you’ll find automation plugins for multiple marketing needs, such as your site’s E-commerce functionality, managing and connecting with your customer base, optimizing your content for better search engine rankings, etc.

No matter the nature of your website, by using one or a combination of these plugins, you’ll be able to automate a lot of tasks that can get very tedious on a long-term daily basis.

1. Recommendation Engine

While surfing through successful online stores you’ll come across their personalized recommendation bar. Usually titled something like — Customers who viewed this item also viewed — or — Frequently bought together.

You can learn a lot, looking at how one of the world’s largest retailers personalizes and utilizes their own recommendation tool.

If you already have an established website, then setting up this plugin will boost your sales by a considerable margin with minimum effort on your end.

The plugin gathers the necessary data automatically and then you can choose to display items to your customers, based on similar products that other customers have viewed, similar products that your customers have purchased, or similar products that your customers have purchased together. You can easily choose one of these three types of recommendations and let the plugin handle the rest for you, automating the entire process, so you can focus on other aspects of your online business.

2. WordPress Form Maker

To maintain an online presence, and effectively manage a growing customer base, you need a well-organized mailing list and submission forms. Working towards building an effective mailing list would go a long way in establishing your website for automation.

These display options contain a lot of additional settings so you can easily manage their functionality on in your website. Running a website is much like having a house. It is very important that you stay on top of everything that goes on in it. Such as, who goes in and out of your website, how long they stay, where they come from, and where they go out from or what they do once they’re in.

There’s a certain point in any online platform’s growth, where you need to stop planning based on guesswork and start growing based on factual data and statistics.

Identifying the patterns in these statistics and data is what defines analytics.

When it comes to the marketing aspect of your site, the most important part of your statistical feedback is website traffic analytics.

There are many website traffic metrics to track. The specific examples that I’m about to mention are all found in Google Analytics. Let’s discuss them in more detail.

  1. What’s a website traffic metric?
  2. Website Traffic
  3. Conversion Rate
  4. Demographics & Traffic Source
  5. New Users vs Returning Users
  6. Bounce Rate
  7. Lead Generation Costs
  8. Exit Pages
  9. Top Visited Pages
  10. Average Time on Site
  11. Speed

But first, let’s answer the most urgent question:

What’s a website traffic metric?

Website traffic, that is the number of visitors your site gets in a set timeframe, is actually more complex than it seems, and you can interpret it in many ways. A website traffic metric is a quantifiable indicator of an aspect of your website’s popularity. Different metrics answer different questions you may have about your site: What’s the most popular page? How long do my visitors usually stay? What causes them to leave? What percent of visitors then becomes a customer? What does gaining a client cost me on average?

All these questions largely pertain to the big questions: You place ads and use other techniques to get website visitors. They enter your site at point A and, ideally, they’d exit it as clients (readers, registered users, buyers, etc.). And yet, they often wiggle out of some point B. The question is, what happens? Why do conversions fail and how do they succeed?

As we mentioned earlier, the metric examples in this article can be found on Google Analytics, the most popular website analysis tool. If you have a WordPress website then a very convenient way of getting all your Google Analytics results straight on your WordPress sidebar is by installing the WD Google Analytics plugin. It also conveniently adds an easy-to-read analytics dashboard straight to your WordPress dashboard panel.

In the list, you’ll see a lot of metrics that are meant to track your conversions from various sources.

To use these metrics you need to start tracking your conversions separately, so you can use them in various segments later. Follow this tutorial and set up goals to start tracking your conversions.

Now onto some of the most important metrics that you need to pay attention to:

1. Website Traffic

Let’s start off with the single metric that enables and gives significance to every other metric.

Traffic, or session as it’s listed in Google Analytics, does not signify success by its own, since different companies have different objectives and manage traffic in different ways.

On the other hand, patterns in traffic data can reveal a lot about your website’s overall direction. Increases or decreases in traffic are huge identifiers in the overall correct implementation and execution of your marketing strategies.
analytics-traffic-session
So, how to track website traffic? The easiest and most popular way is to use Google Analytics. The great thing about it is that you’ll also get all other relevant stats and can start analyzing comprehensive data related to your site.

2. Conversion Rate

Conversion rate defines the number of users that convert from “passive visitors” — who read through your content and leave, to “active visitors” who eventually buy your product, sign-up to your website, or click on requested links.

Converted active visitors are the necessary factor in achieving the marketing goals you’ve set up (conversions).

To track your site’s conversion rate, you need to isolate conversions from returning visitors, then compare the patterns.

If your new visitors’ conversion rate is on the decline, then you need to take a look at what new users lay their eyes on when they first visit your site and work on optimizing and improving that experience for them.

3. Demographics & Traffic Source

Through the demographics section of your Google Analytics, you can look at how your users are segmented based on their age, gender, geolocation, etc.

Using this information you can draw a more accurate representation of your user base, to enhance your marketing strategy.

Traffic source, on the other hand, is split into 3 main sections — direct visitors, search visitors, referral visitors — each source is important in its own way, so having an overview on where your users are coming from can provide a lot of valuable information so you can plan your content strategy accordingly.

  • Search visitors — users who have found your website through online search engines, such as, Google and Bing.
  • Direct visitors — users who visit your website directly by typing the URL in the address bar of their browser.
  • Referral visitors — users who find your website by following a link from another website that redirects them to yours. This source is extremely important if you use referral marketing as your main traffic source.

Note that recently a lot of traffic comes from social media websites: people often follow the links their friends share rather than go browsing the web on their own. To increase visitors arriving through social media sites, make sure to have social sharing buttons on your shareable content or even directly encourage social sharing.
traffic-source-demographics

4. New Users vs Returning Users

You can check the percentage of your returning users to new users in the “Behavior” section of your Google Analytics then clicking on “New vs Returning” and then by comparing the data, you can check how many of your users are returning visitors.

This way you’ll figure out if your current content, landing pages, and user experience are working as intended in retaining your users to revisit your site.

New-returning-analytics

High returning visitor percentage is a good indication that your website offers valuable information and content that incentivizes users to return.

5. Bounce Rate

This metric shows how many of your visitors have left the website right after their arrival, aka single-page sessions. If the percentage of this metric is too high, that means your users aren’t sticking around browsing the content of your site.

bounce-rate

Bounce rates carry more importance with some websites than others, it all depends on the type of your website. So a high percentage isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but that’s up to you and your site’s objectives.

Bounce rate also doesn’t tell you the reason why people might be leaving after a single page.

You might want to check on the first impression your landing pages are giving and increase the quality of your content so that your users are incentivized to browse more.

When it comes to landing pages, the rule of thumb is to simplify it as much as possible so the visitor immediately understands what your website’s main promise is and how you’re going to deliver on it. Minimum text, clear messaging, sleek design, a couple of reviews and a short description of the company or the person the site is dedicated to. That’s all you need for a good first impression.

Another tip is to consider all the possible reasons why people bounce the page and A/B test them all to find out which of the suspects is to blame.

6. Lead Generation Costs

Sometimes referred to as “cost per conversion”, this website traffic metric that you’ll find in the “E-commerce” section of your analytics tracks just how much you’re paying for lead generation. At some point, even if your advertisements or paid referrals are bringing in a lot of conversions, but your net income is below 0 from your lead generated sources, then perhaps it’s time to revise your referral and ad campaigns.

7. Exit Pages

In some cases, you’ll notice that despite your low bounce rates in relation your conversion rating isn’t increasing. The exit pages metric will show you the pages that have the highest amount of visitors leaving your site from them.

Generally, you’d want your exit pages to be along the lines of either your subscription confirmation pages or your checkout pages if you’re running an online marketplace.

If you have low bounce rates and your visitors aren’t leaving after a single page, you need to identify those exit pages and fixing the underlying issues will work wonders in increasing the conversion rating of your site.

8. Top Visited Pages

Besides keeping tabs on where your visitors come from and where they leave your site from, you need to keep track of the specific pages that your visitors are most attracted to.

This website traffic metric is the best indication of what’s most appealing to your users. If you’ve had different sorts of content on your site, by tracking this metric you can identify the most successful types of content on your site and shift your content production in that direction.

Sometimes your top pages might be a result of referral visitors, analyzing and comparing your traffic sources with your top pages should give you the information you need on which pages are organically attracting visitors and which are due to referral visitors.

9. Average Time on Site

The “average time on site” metric calculates how long your users are spending on your site per each session. Analyzing this data should provide a good indication of how engaging your site is to your users.

You just have to monitor closely to make sure that your users’ session duration on each page corresponds correctly with the content and/or function that those pages represent.

10. Conversion by Traffic Source

Earlier in the article, we looked at the three categories of traffic source and how to track them.

To track your conversions based on where your users have reached your website from you need to go to custom reports, select your conversions tracker from the “Metric” tab and add your desired traffic source from the “Dimension” tab and give your custom report a name.

This way you can track your conversion rate per traffic source to see their actual effectiveness besides the amount of traffic they bring to your site.

11. Speed

Sure, we had promised you just 10 website traffic metrics it’s important to keep track of but no web traffic metric listicle can be complete without a mention of the significance of speed. With the constant betterment of technology, the average is growing less and less patient. Nowadays, your page needs to load in just 2 seconds to be able to retain its visitors and leave them satisfied.

Google’s algorithm definitely also favors faster websites, so reducing your load time as much as possible will also lead to higher search engine rankings and a surge in organic traffic.

Now, how does Google Analytics go about accounting for website speed? You can view a report of all your webpages in the “Page Timings” report, as well as take a look at the “Speed suggestions” report to find out where exactly you went wrong.

Besides the “Reports” section in Google Analytics, Google has also devised a way for you to grade your site’s performance online. Here you can write in your URL and find out your website’s PageSpeed score. Typically, what you should be aiming for is a score of 90+.

dashboard displaying pagespeed score

What can you do if your site’s PageSpeed score is too low? The big contributing factor is hosting. By switching to 10Web’s automated hosting that costs just 10 dollars a month in a click, you can instantly get a score of 90+ and stop worrying about hosting slowing down your site.

As mentioned earlier, we got all these web traffic metrics by using the Google Analytics WD plugin, which you can read some more about it in this WP Buffs article.

As a final reminder, while all of these website traffic metrics are important, it is up to you to figure out which ones suit best for your site and objectives. Then identify and optimize them to maximize the efficiency of your website’s analytics. Do you keep track of these metrics on your website? What sort of changes have you made as a result of traffic analysis? Let us know in the comments below!

Surfing some of the biggest blogs out there, for example those of Kate McCulley and Daniel James (from Dan Flying Solo), and reading about how they gave up full-time jobs to start traveling and ended up living a life of luxury, earning a fortune writing about their adventures is guaranteed to be either a highway to hell or a stairway to heaven.

Either way, before shouting out to the world that “blogging is the easiest thing on earth” and “anyone can do it” I suggest you think twice.

traveling and photography blogging

In reality, blogging is a full-time job and requires dedication, patience, creativity, commitment, marketing skills, and so much more.

The sad reality is that there are lots of problems bloggers face and they cause most of the beginning bloggers to fail. Especially it is a drag to browse already popular blogs and see the whole range of skills and talents on display: excellent writing, brilliant photography, fun videos and witty debates in the comments. And yet, if you ever feel discouraged from starting something just because other people are far ahead, remember to have the courage to suck at something new. Besides, those blogs probably have a whole team of professionals working for them. No one has all the talents.

Anyway, now that we’re past the initial pep talk, let’s talk about the absolutely necessary quality for a beginning blogger: optimism. It’s indeed true that mostly whenever there’s a problem, there is also the solution! So, let’s identify the 10 major blogger issues and discuss the solutions in more detail.

  1. Not having a clear topic and niche for the blog
  2. Lack of quality content
  3. Writing style
  4. Voice
  5. Plagiarism alert!
  6. Not keeping on topic
  7. Not enough traffic
  8. Absence of feedback
  9. Few or no repeat visitors
  10. Low income

1. Not having a clear topic and niche for the blog

Finding the right topic for your blog website is the very first and probably most important step in blogging. A lot of beginners fail here because of the unwillingness to narrow down their blog’s focus.

You might want to blog about makeup, hairstyle, fashion, and photography all at the same time but not having a concrete topic is in no way going to bring you success.

Think of all your favorite blogs or just the blogs you know. Notice how you can clearly differentiate blogs on current issues in your country from blogs dedicated to, say, Katy Perry’s fashion choices? Exactly. Readers need to know what you’re promising. That’s why all those wishy-washy personal blogs get categorized and branded as soon as they gather even a small readership. Wondering which 7 blog niches are growing in popularity recently?

Here you can read about all the pros of having a niche while blogging, from attracting a specific audience to better-planned SEO.

blog topic ideas

Solution: When building a house the first stones are chosen most carefully and constructed with extra caution. It’s the same with blogging: selecting your focus should be done very carefully, so that you’re able to stick to it.

You better start by making a list of all the things that you love/are passionate about.

Then start the process of evaluation: consider the importance of each of the topics for yourself personally and your knowledge about each, do a bit of research to identify the competition. That way you can narrow down the list until you reach one single topic.

Make it as specific as possible. But again, make sure it’s not so specific it becomes boring for you or you’ll abandon your readers halfway through.

2. Lack of quality content

Nothing matters as much as quality content. It’s your biggest weapon when attracting readers and trying to keep their attention.

Lack of high-quality content can be a hell of a problem.

Also, pay attention to the very real tradeoff between quality and quantity. There may be exceptions, but typically the well-researched original piece of reporting you spent three days writing is better than the genial shower thought.

5 star blog content

Solution: In order to create an outstanding piece you need to take real interest in the topic and feel inspired to write it. Ask yourself those important questions: Why am I interested in this? What’s the value or uniqueness of this particular narrative angle?

On the other hand, you shouldn’t forget the readers — in the end, you are writing for your audience. It might be useful to settle for yourself why the post will be important or engaging for the target audience, how trendy or important the topic is, and how your ideal reader will be transformed or moved by reading your piece.

I’d also advise doing some research: reading the top-ranked posts on the same topic to assess the competition so that you can bring something new and interesting to the table.

Finally, quality content depends on media use, too, so try to include more than plain boring text.

Videos, images, links, polls, and games will liven up your blog and make it more unique. Medium is the message after all.

3.Writing style

You don’t need to be a professional writer to blog, but your writing style might become a blogger problem if it’s too dull, monotonous, academic or something along those lines.

Ultimately, you don’t target yawning readers, do you?

yawning woman with a smartphone

Solution: It might seem like a cliché, but the best thing you can do to improve your writing is write the way you talk.

Keep it simple and short: the simpler your speech, the more attractive it is.

If your readers felt like reading complicated words and elaborate sentence structures, they’d probably pick up Ulysses, instead of visiting your blog.

Here you will find detailed tips on how to write the way you talk.

4. Voice

Your blog is your brand and you need to have a unique voice to keep your readers interested.

As it goes, fans of Taylor Swift would hardly listen to your Metallica, and lovers of romance literature probably wouldn’t appreciate your sci-fi!

Having a specific voice in all of your posts is a way to define yourself and your blog, as a result attracting readers who truly care about your content.

However, finding that one specific fitting voice might be quite hard sometimes because you definitely have more than just one style of expression.

"Find your voice" with a microphone to the left of it

Solution: Think about your target audience. Whether you’re targeting angsty teenagers, photographers or professional cooks is quite important when choosing your voice.

Once you’ve specified the audience, you need to research their culture and check the specific terms and slang they use, the style they like. Some bloggers even advise to write for one ideal reader.

5. Plagiarism alert!

Sometimes it’s hard to get rid of the impression that all the best music has already been composed, the best books written, and the best drawings painted.

Whatever you do, it eventually turns out that someone somewhere already had the same idea, realized it, and you were messing with someone else’s intellectual property the whole time. And there is no way to prove you never even heard of the dude!

So, plagiarism is a big threat to your blogging career.

A lamp with "Copy" written to its left and "Paste" to its right

Solution: This is one of the hardest issues to face.

One general piece of advice would be reading more to expand your mindset and be more aware of what’s been said already. Paraphrasing, if used properly, is also a powerful tool. But that doesn’t mean that using the same idea and replacing a few words with synonyms is going to work.

Another important aspect is making sure to stop and check whenever you’re suspicious about a certain idea or formulation and not being afraid of quoting and referencing, if it comes to that.

We are indeed standing on the shoulders of giants, after all! Finally, online plagiarism detecting services, such as quetext and edubirdie are quite helpful.

6. Not keeping on topic

Once you’ve established your niche, you should stick to it. Consistency in topics is crucial for keeping your readers and followers: they started following you for a reason.

Failing to keep on topic is one of the reasons some bloggers fail to maintain and grow their community.

a maze with a question mark at the center of it

Solution: All you have to do is stay loyal to your niche and restrain from getting too broad. If your blog is about progressive metal music, writing a post about a new great garage rock revival band can be considered a betrayal.

Consider each post before you start working on it, make sure it belongs to at least one of your blog’s categories. Try to think like your readers again.

If your blog is aimed at marine biologists, become one! Just kidding, try to think as one and decide whether the topic is interesting for them.

If your answer is ”hardly,” you are better off without that post.

7. Not enough traffic

Here comes one of the most heartbreaking problems: you work hard on your posts, you have informative and interesting content, but your blog gets no traffic. The search engines just hide your blog from potential readers.

A colorful chart with a dozen of different characters around it

Solution: Self-promotion is key to being successful in the blogger world. You need to make yourself visible to the engines.

You might have heard of SEO. Maybe you’re already sick of it and think it’s overrated, but the thing is that SEO can pull you out of the shadows. You need to know the basics of SEO to adjust your posts and content in a way that Google never passes by without noticing you.

Self-promotion nowadays is such a vast realm that there are almost too many things you can do to get your blog read. Besides working on your blogging website’s SEO, you can write guest posts and link back to your blog, buy an ad spot in a similar blog, make a special effort to write on the trendiest subjects, optimize your website’s performance, make friends with influencers and get a shoutout. But none of these will work out that well if you don’t work on your site’s SEO.

Yet another thing that you can do to increase your traffic is social media promotion. Opening a Facebook, Instagram and/or Twitter page and spreading information about the existence of your blog might not be a bad idea.

8. Absence of feedback.

How do you interpret the silence of your readers? Is your content just “no comment” cool or are they indifferent? It’s disheartening (ha!) to put your heart into your the posts only to get 0 attention in return!

A thought bubble made up of different cartoon people

Solution: Well, for now keep in mind that most readers who read your blog will not leave a comment no matter what. You see, that’s just the most common way people browse. So, one way to get more feedback and that boost of serotonin that comes with it, try to devise other ways visitors can participate. Can they just “like” or click a specific emoji? Vote in an online survey? Take a test or play a game?

If you’re dead set on getting more comments, remember that give-and-take works both in life and on the blogosphere, so commenting on others’ blog posts is one option. The important thing though is to show your readers that you value their say.

Be responsive; try to reply to the comments you get as quickly as possible. Engage your readers by explicitly asking for their opinion, encouraging them to leave you feedback.

Finish your posts with a question for your readers, asking about what they think on the topic, etc.

9. Few or zero repeat visitors

You might be read but not consistently. If very few are willing to stick around and follow your blog, something is definitely wrong.

Welcome back written on a painting next to a plant and a notebook

Solution: It’s important to consider the fact that most people these days browse everything through social media sites. Mostly, people don’t type in URLs, they “like” a page on Facebook or “follow” it on Instagram or Twitter and then if something that content creator posts sparks their interest, only then they click. Meaning it is absolutely crucial that you foster you social media presence. Even better if you form a community that will like and share your blog posts in exchange of, well, you liking and sharing their posts.

In general, I do believe that once you fix all the above-mentioned issues — especially the ones regarding consistency and quality of content — more and more people will be eager to return to your blog and subscribe/bookmark.

Finally, You can also invite your readers to subscribe to your blog or suggest they register for a newsletter and keep them updated on any new posts or events. If you’re not sure how to create a newsletter, check this article out.

10. Low income.

Finally, last but surely not the least painful problem, if your initial motivation was money, is low income.

Coins stacked up near a calculator

Solution: First thing to keep in mind is that you need to be patient. Nothing happens right away. It’s reasonable to have other income sources to rely on until you gain popularity.

Don’t stick to just one platform — promote yourself on many! Then, after your blog develops and flourishes, there are lots of ways to make money through it, most connected with monetization and selling ads.

One of the most widely used methods is monetizing the blog with CPC and CPM ads. Here you’ll find valuable advice on how to make money with your blog.

How often you should revise your website seo

SEO is like your stairway to hea…Mm, I mean, to the top Google rankings, of course. The cooler your content the more visitors are likely to stay on your page and read on.

However, before the human factor comes the search engine. You have to impress it, make it notice you in order to reach the top Google rankings and be noticed by the reader, too. This means that you need a proper SEO strategy for your website.

SEO, that is to say search engine optimization, is the way you optimize your content in order to be noticed by the search engines. It’s about the keywords, meta-titles and other attributes, the frequency and length of your content, etc.SEO

It’s easy to conclude that devising an SEO strategy is not something you do once and then concentrate on your content.

Truth is, you should constantly revise and update your SEO strategy to climb up and stay in the upper positions when searched.

You’re probably asking, “What do you mean by saying “revise website SEO?” What exactly needs to be revised? How often should I update my website for SEO?”

Let’s cover the revision process point by point,  from the on-page components to the off-page SEO elements and the optimal frequency for revising each.

  1. On-Page SEO
  2. Keywords
  3. Content
  4. New Content
  5. Off-Page SEO
  6. Social Profiles
  7. Inbound links
  8. How often should you update your site for SEO?

On-Page SEO

On Page SEOOn-page SEO refers to the strategies, rules, and methods you use directly on your webpage for search engine optimization. Those include your keyword use, content elements, such as titles, meta-titles, tags, etc. as well as content updates.

Keywords

keywordsWell, SEO itself is often directly linked to keyword use. And while it is so much more than merely using the right keywords in the right places and forms, the importance of using the right keywords on your website can’t be overestimated.

So before you produce a new article or a post you should carefully research the related keywords and use them in order to “please the search engines.”

It is not enough, though. The reality is, keyword popularity keeps changing. The older popular keywords become extinct and new ones are generated. So, you need to go back to your older posts and analyze your keyword use again time after time.

Also keep in mind that Google has moved away from taking into account just the number of keywords so keyword-stuffing a bad article won’t get your site on the front page. As important as keywords are, nothing is more important than quality content and even crawl bots understand that now.

So, how often should you update old posts for SEO? Optimally, once in three months is a great frequency, but if your time boundaries are too tight, revisiting your keyword use once every 6 months is also a viable option.

Content

ContentHere we mean the meta-titles, headers, tags, descriptions, and other SEO-related elements you use on your website. They’re super important for your website’s SEO strategy.

The meta descriptions are the first thing the viewer of the page sees before answering the “to click or not to click” question. The headers are the HTML elements that literally “catch the eye“ and should also be adjusted to the ranking trends.

Again, like in the case of keywords, before choosing the tags or writing the headers you need to research the popular words and expressions on your topic to make the right choices.

For example, it is standard practice to keep the title tags shorter than 55-60 characters. For a fuller list of rules for optimizing your titles and headers, check this article out.

Another standard practice is writing long and substantial articles that include videos and other forms of media. You can go back to your older posts and add new infographics and videos to them from time to time.

As for revisiting your content strategy, make sure you revise your titles, header tags, and other elements once your keyword strategy is updated, since the HTML elements are closely related to keywords.

In all other cases when Google or other popular search engines update their ranking algorithms, revisiting your website SEO strategy and adjusting your descriptions, titles, and headers is an absolute must.

New Content

new contentCreating fresh new content is obviously one of the most important steps not just for your SEO improvement but for the maintenance and sustainability of your website.

Updating your content is something you should do often and well. It’s a must for reminding the user and the engines about yourself, keeping the reader interested and involved, etc. Here’s why having new content on your website is crucial:

  • Fresh content means more frequent indexing. Though this doesn’t automatically mean that your posts will rank higher, it definitely means that Google will scan your site more often. So, if you improve your content and become a guru of SEO, your posts will be noticed faster and higher rankings are sure to follow.
  • Google algorithm favors frequent updates. Now, of course, this doesn’t mean you should construct your whole website around this SEO preference, because the quality and SEO of your posts may suffer, but it does mean that frequent new content should be a part of your SEO strategy.
  • Content is indeed king. By posting new and well-researched content on a topic that also follows other SEO rules, you are slowly building up your authority in the field in the eyes of both Google and your visitors.

The optimal frequency of updating website content varies from website to website, from topic to topic. Lots of sources favor daily content updates, however, before you commit to such frequent blogging make sure you have the resources and the niche for it.

So, how often should you blog for SEO? The general tip is updating your content approximately once a week. Here you can read about why blogging on a daily basis might harm your SEO rather than do it good.

Off-Page SEO

Off Page SEOYour website SEO strategy isn’t limited to the tactics you use on your website. It includes your social media promotion, inbound link marketing for organic traffic building, etc. Each of those should also be revised from time to time in order for your website to rank higher. Check the ultimate off-page SEO checklist here.

Social Profiles

Social ProfilesSocial media is your business card inviting new visitors to your website. That’s why it has an indirect yet powerful effect on your SEO.

The social media strategy includes the platforms you use for promotion, the profiles, the content you share, the comments and discussions, etc.

Recently, there is even an argument being made that social media is the new SEO. More and more people rely on social media searches first and foremost, so those have recently been included in the algorithm.

Besides, all the social media shares your posts get are backlinks. Moreover, some claim that social media is the best way to build up a link but the most important shares and comments are from the multipliers and influencers of the industry. That’s why you need to monitor who’s who in the industry – and there are always newcomers and retirees – to cite them, collaborate with them, interview them.

Keeping track of the feedback your new content receives on social media is how you figure out the topics and forms your visitors prefer which leads to business-specific adjustments to your social profiles.

Revisiting your social profiles weekly, analyzing their progress/regress and updating your social media strategy accordingly is the optimal way to improve your SEO strategy.

Inbound links

Inbound LinksInbound links are the links to your website from other websites. You often get these through guest posting, gaining partners, setting up an affiliate program, etc.

Keeping track of your inbound links and making sure none of those are broken (leading to removed pages) is very important for your website’s SEO strategy. Broken or spammy links should be removed ASAP.

Again, you should monitor your inbound links constantly. I’d advise returning to them every other month, as well as every time you make major website changes, including deleting web pages, changing servers or other actions that might lead to some older links breaking.

Not sure how to fix your own website’s broken links? Check out this article about setting up redirects on your WP website.

How many competitors does your business have? Dozens? Hundreds? Thousands? Why do people choose you over them?

There are endless ways to stand out, and striking advertising campaigns are only one of them.

Customers will notice you and will be more likely to pay you after you follow these 10 steps:

    1. Find/create your unique selling proposition
    2. Focus on your niche
    3. Study the competition
    4. Focus on the user, not the product
    5. Simplify the buying process
    6. Improve your pricing policy
    7. Provide the best customer care
    8. Make users market the brand for you
    9. Learn how to react to criticism
    10. Keep testing new strategies

1. Unique selling proposition (USP)

Do you sell burgers? There must be dozens of other burger places in the area. You must have some kind of special sauce if customers keep coming back to you.

A special sauce is something every business needs: manufacturing, retail, services — everywhere. It can be your packaging design, delivery speed, a special ingredient or diverse team.

The classic printed ad for Rolls-Royce by David Ogilvy, known as “Father of Advertising,” tells us how quiet the engines work (USP 1), meanwhile telling about details like an electric clock in the machine which was a sign of luxury back in 1959 (USP 2).

The entire copy lists the unique selling propositions of the car. You can pick only one and build your marketing communication around it.

Or you can create your USP by accenting one of your qualities. Think of it: ask a stranger to spend some time in your company and try the product. There’s certainly something you don’t notice that makes what you do special.

2. Focus on your niche

Mass markets are extremely appealing, we all know it. Who doesn’t want to own a company like Coca Cola or Samsung?

Yet, a narrow target market can help your business make the first steps faster.

Let’s say you’re opening a daycare center and there are a lot of them in the neighborhood.

Think of a daycare who offers an extended range of services for children with special needs or one that offers services in the second language of your area.

There may be only 1000 people who need your services in your city. Yet, you already have a guaranteed interest of 1000 prospects.

When you doubt if working for a niche is worth it, remember that Amazon started off as a bookstore, Coca Cola used to be sold in pharmacies only, and Apple keeps releasing only flagman smartphones once a year.

3. Study the competition

Know your enemy and yourself.

You can’t win the competition battle unless you know both the strong and the weak points of your competitors.

If low prices are their strong quality and you want to win by offering the lowest price, go ahead and check their offers every day.

If you realize you can’t compete with the same feature, focus on another one. For example, if you can’t afford any lower prices, offer better service.

For markets with impossible competition, there’s a strategy called “underdog advertising.”

It started with the famous Avis campaign by David&Goliath. Hertz had more than 60% share in the car rental market with no intention to lose that share when Avis launched their campaign with the tagline “When you’re only No. 2, you try harder. Or else.”

Within 3 years, the market share gap between Hertz and Avis went from 61%–29% to 49%–36%.

4. Focus on the user, not the product

Remember Apple with the “Think Different” campaign by TBWA Chiat/Day? They weren’t selling a way of thinking, were they? But they knew that in the market, it’s the customer’s needs that matter.

The campaign was mainly a response to IBM’s tagline “Think” but in a way that their target audience would relate.

In 2012, Weiden+Kennedy shot a commercial for Chrysler to be aired during the halftime of the Superbowl.

Touching the problems that every American relates to and speaking about the brand only during the last seconds of the 2-minute commercial, “Halftime in America” has become a textbook example of storytelling in advertising.

Today, as digital marketing and useful content have become vital, storytelling techniques are developing around digital content.

The concept of StoryBrand explains in detail how to tell your story with the customer as the hero character and you as their guide.

5. Simplify the buying process

Ever wondered why Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is the richest man on the Earth? Just ask Google why people use Amazon.

Most of the responses include one feature: it’s super easy to buy from there.

There are some rules for making the purchase simple for the customers:

  1. Few steps — let the users click as few buttons as possible. If two steps can be combined in one page, do it. Put the “Buy now”, “Add to cart” and “Go to cart” buttons at the most visible parts of the page.
  2. Little information — only ask for the information that is essential for a safe transaction and successful delivery.
  3. Create shortcuts — don’t make the users fill in their address every time they order something and don’t ask for the payment information if they feel comfortable to save it for automated payments.

Make sure to have all your policies spelled out on your website so that the users find answers quick.

6. Improve your pricing strategy

Those who are new to marketing might think that offering the lowest prices possible is the best pricing strategy. But it’s only one of the many options.

There are various psychological tricks that can help you set the most desirable price. Here are some of them:

  • Premium pricing — when you keep the prices as high as possible to assure customers that your product is unique and worthy. Watch and learn from haute couture brands.
  • Decoy pricing — when you offer several products and the most expensive one seems worth its price due to the comparison to the more affordable but less attractive product.
  • High-low pricing — initially offering a high price, then giving discounts to reduce the price to what the competitors offer, keeping it attractive due to the limited discount.

Do your research and find the perfect pricing strategy for your target audience.

7. Provide the best customer service

How many times have you seen a review that says “never shopping here again” because of unsatisfactory customer service? It happens all the time. Employees that talk to your customers are the face of your company.

Remember that there’s more to customer care than a smiling face and polite words. Users want to have their problems fixed.

You may have a small business with no dedicated customer care specialists. But it’s not something a customer cares about.

Ludwig.guru is a platform for people who want to write in better English. It’s automated and super simple.

Yet, sometimes questions or problems occur and the company’s founder is known to respond to users fast and straight to the point. And when you receive the best treatment from the founder, you start to think that the entire company is operating at a high level.

8. Make users market the brand for you

Satisfied customers are your best advertising. Think of the many times you bought something after your friend tried and recommended it. So one of every business’s basic needs is to satisfy the customers.

You can’t make every one of them happy but you can at least try.

Besides friends’ recommendations, people follow online reviews more and more often before deciding to make a purchase. You hear about a nice restaurant in the neighborhood, go to Google Maps to find the directions and while you’re there, you take a look at the customers’ reviews.

More than two customers say that the waiters were rude?

You start thinking about going to their competitor instead. Check this list for the top 22 websites where businesses should keep checking your reviews.

Ask your customers to leave their feedback online, then respond to those reviews.

9. Learn how to handle criticism

When it comes to the question of how to react to criticism, there’s one general answer: react with respect. The rest comes with studying others’ experience, trying and constantly improving.

No matter what, you will always have unsatisfied customers. The worst thing that can happen is your disrespectful response.

Learn to recognize and accept constructive criticism. Thank users for it.

If a customer makes up a story to discredit you, you’re expected to confront them by telling what really happened and keeping your professional tone of voice.

And in the rare cases when customers just don’t like the ideas you promote, you have a lot to learn from Spark who handled the comment on their LGBT-supportive Facebook post perfectly:

10. Keep testing new strategies

Is your marketing strategy working magic? If it is, it doesn’t mean you can relax now. Many corporations were famous for starting large-scale ad campaigns only after the sales rates were starting to drop.

Never do this! Keep experimenting with new marketing strategies.

Remember Toys “R” Us’s tragic story of bankruptcy? The same can happen to any beloved and popular company.

Embrace all your new marketing ideas. Your brand deserves it.

Security is one of the most important aspects and we at 10Web put a lot of emphasis on it. Here’s how to enable and use 10Web security service.

Enabling your website’s security

Click “Enable now” from the Security subsection in the left menu:

Done! You’ll see these security tabs and are ready to start using 10Web security.

Running a scan

You can scan your website for issues and vulnerabilities as many times as you like. Just click “Run scan” from the right side of the screen:

Customizing the scan

The “Settings” tab is where you can turn particular aspects of the scan, such as WordPress or plugin vulnerabilities, on and off.

Our recommendation is to mostly keep all of these switches on “Yes:” better safe than sorry.

Dealing with security issues

The “Issues” tab shows all the recent modifications made to your files.

You can click on particular files to see details about the changes and easily restore earlier file versions if they were undesired.

If the changes were authorized or implemented by you, you can click “Ignore” so they won’t show up in future scans.

Instead, you can find them in the “Ignored Issues” tab.

Dealing with vulnerabilities

We always have the up to date database containing known WP/plugin vulnerabilities, especially those of particular versions.

If a scan reveals any vulnerabilities, you can find them in the “Vulnerabilities” tab.

Clicking on these vulnerabilities will open a mini box with the link where you can update the plugin or WordPress to get rid of it.

This covers the basics of what you need to know about enabling and using 10Web Security service. Please don’t hesitate to comment or contact us if you have any questions. Safe sailings!
